Football team rise above disaster to have dream season
But for Vegalta Sendai who finished in that position in last season's J-League -- Japan's top soccer competition - fourth place was truly a miracle.
The Japanese soccer club has rarely tasted glory in its short history. Despite having a small but vociferous fan base, the team is better know as perennial nearly-men; forever stuck in Japan's second division as promotion to the big league eluded them season after season.
Yet in March last year Vegalta Sendai was looking forward with optimism to a rare season in Japan's top flight. On March 11 those dreams turned to rubble.
The team's stadium was declared to be "in ruins" by J-League chairman Kazumi Ohigashi, its training ground destroyed.
Vegalta's foreign players, so traumatized by what they saw, canceled their contracts and returned home. The players that remained helped in the clean up operation and ran soccer camps for the orphans. The league was suspended.
"Immediately after the earthquake and tsunami we, as a team, wondered if we should, and could, continue to play soccer," said the team's coach, Makoto Teguramori.
But it was controversially decided that the J-League would continue. The club was homeless and its fans traumatized but Teguramori believed that Vegalta Sendai could "be the symbol of hope for the entire Tohoku region and to lead and encourage the reconstruction efforts with our strong performance."
Which is exactly what happened. Despite only ever being a minor footnote in Japan's soccer history, Vegalta Sendai went on an incredible 11 game unbeaten run and sat at the top of the league table. Before their first match of the restarted season against Kawasaki Frontale the fans displayed a banner that read: "Thank you for all [our] friends. We do not lose until we regain a hometown."
By the time the team did eventually lose for the first time, Vegalta Sendai had been good to their word. Not only did they beat Kawasaki Frontale 2-1 in dramatic fashion that day, the stadium was quickly rebuilt and the team returned for the rest of the season.
"Everyone who follows the J league was shocked by Sendai's performance. I met so many people who were encouraged by Vegalta. At the same time, they, fans and players, know that to keep on keeping on is important," explained Koji Takao, a writer for Japan's leading Weekly Soccer magazine.
"The people in Sendai started a rush constructing job on the stadium. Although there was some serious damage after March 11 they could host a game against Urawa on April 29. So the speed of reconstruction of the stadium was very fast."
Not everyone could watch Vegalta's matches though.
"People in Tohoku still couldn't watch that game as there was no electricity," he added
After losing for the first time in June many in Japan assumed that Vegalta would then plummet like a stone. But after a brief drop in form the team went on another 11 game unbeaten run that only ended last November.
"To have one good run is difficult to do under the circumstances," said Takao. "To have another good run and bounce back to the top table of the J-league made people in Sendai and Tohoku proud."
In the end, Vegalta Sendai's fairytale dream of winning their first ever J-League championship was a bridge too far. But their fourth placed finish represented their best ever season.
The 2012 J-League season began last Saturday, the day before the anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami. Vegalta Sendai started as they ended last season with a 1-0 win against Kashima Antlers.
But like the Japanese women's national team, who famously won the World Cup last June by beating the U.S. in the final, Vegalta Sendai's performances on the pitch resonated far outside soccer.
"What Vegalta and Nadeshiko Japan [Japan's women's national soccer team] show is how not to give up," said Takao.
"That's why Japanese people cheered for the team. But that cheer was probably not only for the team. It was also for ourselves and the people who suffered." ( cnn.com )

Giffords to have surgery while husband is in space
Giffords will undergo surgery Wednesday so doctors can replace a piece of her skull with a plastic implant, another encouraging step since the Arizona congresswoman was shot in the head more than four months ago.
The surgery — coming just days after Giffords traveled to Florida to watch her husband, Mark Kelly, launch into space — was confirmed to The Associated Press by two people familiar with the congresswoman's care. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the information has not officially been released.
Doctors removed a piece of Giffords' skull to allow room for brain swelling shortly after a would-be assassin shot her in the head Jan. 8, critically wounding her, killing six people and injuring 12 others at a political event in her hometown of Tucson, Ariz.
D-Ariz - FILE - In this March 2010 file photo provided by the office of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., Giffords poses for a photo. Still recovering from a gunshot wound to the head, Giffords was at Kennedy Space Center on Monday, May 16, 2011, to witness husband Mark Kelly and his five crewmates blast off and head to the International Space Station
The three-term Democratic congresswoman has been wearing a helmet adorned with an Arizona state flag. Doctors said when she arrived in Houston in late January they hoped to do the cranial surgery in May.
Dr. Richard Riggs, chair of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said the surgery to place the plastic implant is relatively simple. Recovery is short — a day or two at the most — and is mostly from the effects of anesthesia, he said.
"This gives her quality of life because she won't have to worry about the helmet and protection when moving around," said Riggs, who is not involved in Giffords' care.
The implant is placed under the scalp, allowing hair to grow on top so it is not visible. Riggs said the piece of skull that doctors removed likely was contaminated or shattered by the bullet that pierced the left side of Giffords' brain. That would make the skull unfit to be reattached, which is why doctors would use an implant, Riggs said.
Giffords' chief of staff, Pia Carusone, declined to comment on whether Giffords would undergo the surgery on Wednesday. Giffords' doctors do not comment on her condition without approval from her family.
Giffords returned to Houston and rehab late Monday after watching her husband's shuttle launch in Florida. When Endeavour's five Americans and one Italian got off the ground Monday, Giffords watched in private from a wheelchair on the roof of the launch control center and remarked, "good stuff, good stuff," according to her staff.
That Giffords would watch the shuttle launch seemed improbable a little more than four months ago. And some patients don't have this type of surgery until after they are released from the hospital.
Her doctors have said she has made remarkable progress in what will be a long recovery.
The next step will be to release her from the hospital. Then she will continue speech, occupational and physical therapy at an outpatient clinic. ( Associated Press )

'Good stuff,' Giffords says of shuttle launch
Inside Endeavour somewhere is a handwritten personal note she wrote the shuttle commander, her husband Mark Kelly.
The handful of shuttle watchers, including Giffords' nurse, were mostly quiet as Endeavour took flight. It's hard to hear amid the roar of the spacecraft.
Then Giffords said, "Good stuff, good stuff," according to the congresswoman's aide.

Kelly took her wedding ring into space, which he has done on past flights. But this time she wanted something back: his ring to stay on Earth. She had it around her neck on a silver chain from a funky Arizona jewelry store that included a heart and an Arizona map.
"Relief was her biggest feeling," chief of staff Pia Carusone said in a post-launch press conference. "She was very proud. She's always proud of Mark.
"There were hugs around," Carusone said. "It was very celebratory among the families."
After liftoff, Kelly's identical twin Scott gave red tulips to Giffords and a red rose to his brother's two daughters.
There were no photos. Astronauts' families watch liftoff in private.
This is the next to last shuttle flight as NASA winds down the 30-year shuttle program. During the 16-day mission, Giffords will provide two wake-up songs dedicated to Kelly and she will talk to him in a video conference from Houston. She headed back to Houston hours after the 8:56 a.m. launch to return to the rehabilitation center where she is staying.
The Arizona congresswoman was wounded in an assassination attempt in her hometown of Tucson on Jan. 8. Six people were killed and 12 others were wounded. Kept out of the public eye since then, Giffords has weakness on her right side, and difficulty speaking. ( Associated Press )

Tips to improve hair health and appearance
“One of the most common misconceptions about hair is that it is alive, when in fact hair is nonliving and does not heal itself once it is injured,” Dr. Draelos said. “For this reason, once the hair is damaged it cannot heal itself except through new hair growth at the scalp.
“Women need to understand that the very things that they do to hair to make it appear beautiful, such as using hair dyes, perms and products that straighten the hair, will eventually end up damaging the hair’s structure and ultimately affect its appearance,” she stated.
To keep healthy hair looking its best, Dr. Draelos provided the following tips:
- The less you do to your hair, the better. Avoid over-styling or processing hair.
- Be sure to wash the scalp, which is where the oil is, and then let shampoo run through the hair. Shampoo is meant to clean the scalp primarily and can damage the hair if overused.
- Let how oily your scalp is, determine how often you wash your hair. If your scalp is oily, wash hair more frequently than if the scalp was drier.
- Conditioner should be used on the ends of the hair, not on the scalp, for best results.
- Pick a shampoo and conditioner based on your hair shape, such as curly or straight, and your hair condition, such as damaged, fine, or frizzy. These products don’t need to be expensive to work well for your hair.
- Wear a hat to protect hair from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. ( hindustantimes.com )

Smokers Light Up Inside When Watching Actors Smoke
Smokers Light Up Inside When Watching Actors Smoke - When Don Draper lights up a Lucky Strike, the smokers in the Mad Men audience are simultaneously — and likely unconsciously — planning the actions involved in having a cigarette, according to a new study published in the Journal of Neuroscience.
Researchers led by Todd Heatherington of Dartmouth scanned the brains of 17 right-handed smokers and 17 right-handed nonsmokers while they watched the film Matchstick Men,Mad Men, contains many smoking scenes. Participants were not aware that the study was focused on smoking. Researchers found that brain regions involved in planning and coordinating hand actions lit up when smokers watched actors do so. These areas were active only for the hand that the smoker typically used to have a smoke.
Mirror neuron circuits become active not when people perform an action, but when they see others do so. For example, when if you see someone else smile, your mirror neurons turn on, even sending a preparatory signal to the muscles involved in returning the grin — whether or not you ultimately respond in kind.
Mirror neurons are believed to be critical in allowing us to recognize the thoughts and intentions of others. And understanding how they work has implications far beyond addictions — for example, autism involves difficulty with social relationships that rely on perceiving other people's intent, and altruistic behavior requires being able to take others' perspectives.
Other research on addictions suggests that getting hooked also affects areas of the brain involved in learning — essentially strengthening circuits that drive motivation to continue the habit. Smokers and other addicts learn “too well” to make their habits automatic, and new studies like Heatherington's could help us understand exactly how that may undermine self-control. ( time.com )
